PlayStation VR2 Explained: A Beginner’s Guide to PS5 Virtual Reality

PlayStation VR2, often written as “PS VR2,” is Sony’s virtual reality headset for the PlayStation 5. If you have never tried virtual reality before, it can sound confusing. This guide explains it in plain English: what VR is, what PS VR2 does, what you need, and whether it might be right for you.

What is virtual reality?

Virtual reality, or “VR,” is a technology that puts you inside a game world. You wear a headset that covers your eyes, with a screen in front of each eye. When you turn your head, the view moves with you, as if you were really standing in that place.

Instead of watching a game on a TV, you feel like you are in it. You can look around, lean in, and reach out with your hands using special controllers.

What is PlayStation VR2?

PS VR2 is the second VR headset Sony has made for PlayStation. The first, PlayStation VR, came out in 2016 for the PS4. PS VR2 launched on February 22, 2023, and works only with the PS5.

The standard package includes the headset, the PlayStation VR2 Sense controllers (one for each hand) and stereo headphones, according to the PlayStation Blog.

What do you need to use it?

  • A PS5 console. PS VR2 works with the standard PS5, the PS5 Digital Edition and the PS5 Pro. It does not work with a PS4.
  • Some free space. For games where you stand and move around, Sony recommends a clear play area. Many games can also be played sitting down.
  • VR games. PS VR2 only plays games made for it. Regular PS5 games won’t turn into VR games, though some, like Gran Turismo 7, offer an optional VR mode.

One nice touch: PS VR2 connects to the PS5 with a single USB-C cable. The original PS VR needed a separate box and several cables, so this is much simpler to set up.

Key features explained

Sony packed several technologies into PS VR2. Here’s what they mean:

  • OLED displays: Each eye gets its own 2000 x 2040 pixel OLED screen. OLED is a display type known for rich colors and deep blacks, which helps dark scenes look great.
  • HDR: Short for “high dynamic range.” It lets bright parts of the image look brighter and dark parts darker, for a more lifelike picture.
  • Wide view: Sony lists a field of view of about 110 degrees. “Field of view” is how much of the world you can see at once without turning your head.
  • Inside-out tracking: Cameras on the headset track your movements and the controllers. You do not need an external camera, unlike the first PS VR.
  • Eye tracking: The headset can tell where you’re looking. This lets games use a trick called foveated rendering, which puts the most detail where your eyes are pointed, so the system can work more efficiently.
  • Headset feedback: A small motor in the headset can vibrate gently, for example when something whooshes past your head.
  • Sense controllers: These offer haptic feedback (detailed vibrations), adaptive triggers (buttons that can push back, like pulling a bowstring), and finger touch detection, which senses when your fingers are resting on the buttons.

How much does PS VR2 cost?

PS VR2 launched in the US at $549.99. In March 2025, Sony lowered the recommended US price to $399.99, as announced on the PlayStation Blog.

Prices vary by country, retailers run their own deals, and stock can be patchy depending on where you live. Check PlayStation Direct or major retailers for the current price and availability before you buy.

Can you use PS VR2 on a PC?

Yes, with an extra accessory. In August 2024, Sony released the PlayStation VR2 PC adapter, which lets the headset work with VR games on a Windows PC through SteamVR (Steam’s VR platform).

Be aware that some features, including eye tracking, HDR and headset feedback, are not supported on PC, according to Sony. The adapter is sold separately.

What games can you play?

Some well-known PS VR2 games include:

  • Horizon Call of the Mountain: A climbing and archery adventure set in the world of Horizon, made for PS VR2’s launch.
  • Gran Turismo 7: The racing game has a full VR mode that puts you in the driver’s seat.
  • Resident Evil Village: A horror game with a VR mode, for players who like a scare.
  • Beat Saber: A rhythm game where you slice blocks to music. It’s easy to learn and great exercise.

The library is smaller than the regular PS5 library, so it’s worth browsing the PS VR2 section of the PlayStation Store to see if enough games appeal to you.

Comfort and safety tips

  • Start slowly. Some people feel motion sickness in VR, especially in games where you move without physically walking. Begin with short sessions and take breaks.
  • Use comfort settings. Many games offer options like “snap turning” (turning in steps rather than smoothly), which can reduce dizziness.
  • Clear your space. Move furniture, pets and drinks out of the way before you play.
  • Check age guidance. Sony says PS VR2 is not for use by children under 12.
  • Adjust the fit. Take a moment to adjust the headband and lens settings during setup. A good fit makes the image clearer.

Is PS VR2 right for you?

PS VR2 could be a great fit if you already own a PS5, love the idea of being inside a game, and have a little space to play. It offers impressive visuals and clever features like eye tracking.

It might not be for you if you are prone to motion sickness, have very limited space, or prefer a large library of big-budget games. VR is still a smaller corner of gaming.

The bottom line

PlayStation VR2 is Sony’s virtual reality headset for the PS5. It plugs in with a single cable, uses OLED screens, eye tracking and clever controllers, and has a recommended US price of $399.99 since March 2025. It needs a PS5 and only plays VR-ready games, so check the game library and current price before you buy. If you can, try one in person first.
