A PlayStation is a gaming console made by Sony. The first PlayStation (or PS1) was released in December 1994 and competed with the Nintendo 64 and Sega Saturn systems. It grew in popularity for its expansive game library and popular franchises such as Spider-Man, Crash Bandicoot, Twisted Metal, Tomb Raider and Metal Gear. The original PlayStation became the first console to sell over 100 million units and spawned many sequels and spin-offs. The PS1 continued to be sold until the PlayStation 2 (PS2) came out in 2000, but sales were eventually eclipsed by the faster PS3 and the even more powerful PS4.
The PlayStation brand now includes a number of mobile games and media centers, as well as the PlayStation Network that allows gamers to play online. The latest model of the PlayStation console is the PS5, which debuted in 2020. It is a competitor to the Xbox Series X and Nintendo Switch, but it also introduces a new DualSense controller that has advanced haptic feedback compared with previous models.
PS5 can run most of the same games as older PlayStation consoles, and users can download and install software from the PlayStation Store. It’s available from both the console and on a web interface that works with any device with an Internet connection. Sony also offers a PlayStation app for Android and iOS that lets users access their profile, make purchases and check out notifications from their phone. PlayStation has also experimented with cloud gaming, which is similar to Xbox’s Project XCloud and Google Stadia.
