If you’re in the market for a new console, you’ve got options. But if you want the best gaming experience possible, you’re going to need to go with a playstation.
A PlayStation is a video game console made by Sony that was first released in 1994. Also known as PSX, it was the first of a new generation of 32-bit consoles that used CDs to play games, and it proved very popular, outselling both Sega’s Saturn and Nintendo’s Super Nintendo. The PSX also had a very extensive library of hit games, including popular franchises like Gran Turismo, Twisted Metal and Crash Bandicoot, which spawned many sequels.
The controller for a PlayStation is also a design icon, with its winged shape and abundance of well-positioned buttons. The controls use a patented system called DualSense, which detects the position and pressure of your thumbs on each button, and interprets those signals to control the in-game actions. The PS5 also features the most advanced backwards compatibility of any console, letting you play any game released for the original PlayStation through its successor, the PS3.
The PS5 is by far the biggest console Sony has ever made, and it’s likely to require a few setup tweaks. Most users will need to rethink their TV’s placement, because the PS5 is almost too big to fit under most televisions. Also, because the console runs games at a rock-solid 60fps at 4K resolution, you might find that some older titles run more slowly than they did on previous PlayStation models.
