The father of PlayStation, Ken Kutaragi, had the foresight and personal drive to revolutionize video gaming in 1984. He wanted to bring powerful 3-D computer graphics to console gaming that would rival workstations costing thousands of dollars. Kutaragi convinced Sony management to design a system that could process this data and run software he had written.
He named his creation the PlayStation and set out to market it at CES in 1985. While Nintendo snubbed him by signing a deal with Philips to manufacture its Super NES add-on, Kutaragi convinced Sony’s management that the PlayStation had enough potential to become a major brand in the gaming industry. This despite the fact that management believed video gaming was too much of a toy and would tarnish the company’s reputation as a high-end electronics manufacturer.
