The PlayStation and Its Successors

For over three decades, the PlayStation has remained a fixture of the gaming landscape. The original console signalled Sony’s rise to power in the video game industry, and its use of compact discs paved the way for the industry switch from cartridges. Its success led to a series of successors, with each one attempting to balance accessibility, evolution, and power.

The PlayStation 2 was the most successful home console of its generation, and remains a fan favorite to this day. With a massive library of games, impressive graphical power, and its ability to double as a DVD player, the PS2 is one of Sony’s best-selling consoles.

The PlayStation Portable (PSP) was the first handheld console from Sony, and while it was more on the expensive side compared to other home consoles at the time, the PSP made up for this with its great games like Dissidia Final Fantasy and God of War Chains of Olympus. It was also able to access the internet, and had a very decent graphical capability for its time, which made it a favorite amongst gamers.
