The PlayStation

A series of home video game consoles and handheld devices from Sony Interactive Entertainment. The PlayStation is known for its advanced graphics, high-definition video, and multiplayer gaming support. The brand also includes a mobile app, media center, and an online service. PlayStation products are produced by a range of studios, including Sony’s PlayStation Studios and the independent PlayStation Network.

Founded in 1984 by Ken Kutaragi, the “father of PlayStation,” the system was inspired by an early demonstration of television broadcasts showing 3-D computer graphics. Kutaragi envisioned bringing the power of these real-time 3-D computer graphics to console gaming.

The original PlayStation launched on Dec. 3, 1994, and signaled the beginning of a new era of gaming. Sony’s decision to use CDs instead of cartridges increased the storage capacity and allowed developers to produce larger games. Its affordable pricing and global marketing campaign made the PlayStation accessible to a broader audience of gamers.

With the PlayStation 2 launch in 2000, Sony took the next step towards defining gaming as an immersive media experience with the introduction of 3D graphics and cinematic storytelling. Its sleek design and innovative use of color and sound helped the PlayStation stand apart from its competitors.

The PlayStation Portable (PSP) in 2004 introduced the first handheld PlayStation console to a broader market of gamers. Its robust processor gave it the ability to run many PlayStation 2 titles, and it included multimedia playback functionality and a browser. Its stylish, sophisticated logo was designed by Manabu Sakamoto and accentuated the interplay between the PlayStation initials.
