Sony originally created the PlayStation as an add on for Nintendo’s Super Nintendo Entertainment System. However, when that deal fell through and the company decided to go it alone, it introduced several innovations that helped make the original PS a success. For example, the console was one of the first to use a CD-ROM drive instead of cartridges, which made it cheaper and more reliable. It also was among the first consoles to make the transition from 2D to 3D graphics, and it was a big hit with gamers. The controller featured a design that was familiar to many players because it was essentially an audio CD with a red circle, blue cross, green triangle and pink square that stood for “Play Station.”
In the years since, multiple iterations of the PS have followed, each bringing enhanced graphics capabilities and other innovations. While it’s still too early to say which generation is the best, there are definite reasons why each model has its fans.
For example, the older generations are less expensive and have a large library of games to choose from. They’re also able to connect to HDTVs for immersive gaming experiences. However, newer generations have added more processing power and are capable of supporting virtual reality games. They have also been designed to be more energy-efficient. And they have a more flexible rear connector layout for connecting external storage and devices, including an Ethernet port.
