What is a PlayStation?

A video game console made by Sony. The PlayStation came out in 1995 and helped revolutionise the gaming industry. Its use of CD-ROMs allowed games to be stored more easily and played without the need for cartridges. Its success led to a series of successors including the PS one and the PS 4 (see video game console).

The PlayStation Network is an online service that lets users play games and interact with other players from around the world. It also offers a range of social features and other entertainment. It is operated by Sony Computer Entertainment and is used with the PlayStation 2, PlayStation Portable, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, PlayStation Vita and the PlayStation 5.

With its workhorse hardware, best-in-class controller and gorgeous new graphical potential, the PlayStation 5 has cemented itself as the market leader in 2023, three years after its initial release. Its new slim form factor and the addition of a Pro model that promises extra performance – including 4K 60 frames-per-second gaming, higher dynamic range and ray tracing – make it the best console for playing the most demanding games.

But it’s an irrefutable fact that, even if they can afford to spend almost $200 on a PlayStation 5, many people simply won’t be able to buy one – especially given the current state of austerity in America and growing concerns over the potential for widespread political violence. And that’s fine. They can continue to enjoy the PlayStation 5’s slick UI and Buck Rogers physical design, as well as its dazzling array of first-party games developed by Sony’s dedicated studios.
